A Message from the Chief

Fire Chief
Pete Kelly

As Fire Chief I welcome you to the Fort Wayne Fire Department. It was established in 1839 and now employs 374 firefighters supported by 15 civilian employees. The department serves a diverse population of more than 251,000 people. Its focus is to protect property and save lives through innovative fire prevention, public education and fire suppression coupled with fire investigations that determine cause and origin. I am committed to high quality customer service that is sensitive to the needs of Fort Wayne citizens and visitors alike.

Our department is committed to eliminating loss of life and property. We will focus on establishing more effective ways of serving the public and analyze data that will help us to identify where the greatest needs are.

It is my goal as the first fire chief of the new millennium to insure the best available fire protection and emergency services possible. I want Fort Wayne to be the safest city of its size in the United States of America. Making Fort Wayne the safest City will require growth, innovation, commitment and cooperation.

I am also committed to maintaining diversity within the fire department through recruitment, outreach and mentoring. This will ensure that the Citizens of Fort Wayne are represented in the best way possible. This community and its visitors deserve the best.
